Here’s a beautiful hymn for Thanksgiving to add to our “easy repertoire”. We will play it tomorrow.
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come!
AND inspired by learning a great Scandi tune this weekend at Fiddle Hell, I added a viola part to this Norweigian, autumnal tune in Dm. (This is not the one I learned but I don’t have sheet music for that one yet.)
Dec. 16 - Holiday Party We will have pot luck appetizers, dinner and dessert starting at 6pm. A Holiday Tunes Hootenanny from 7:15pm - done. Hootenanny means individuals can present something by themselves or as a duo/trio, etc. OR you can choose a tune for the whole group to play together.
October 29 - Frank’s wife, Arlene, will join us on piano to accompany The Lover’s Waltz! Aren’t we lucky!
We will also rehearse up to letter B of the Air and learn the next section (up to letter C) together. Since this is our last class of the Early Fall Session, it would be nice to do a final run through of The Mist Covered Mountain, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. This will also be the last week of our Etude by Herrmann. I’ll have a new warm-up for the Late Fall Session.
October 22 - Here is a new piece for us in Violin/Viola duet form. It is an Air by Jean Joseph de Mondonville, a baroque era, 18th-century, composer from France. I will be making practice tracks for this piece. Do what you can until I get them done, please.
For this week, please prepare from the beginning up to practice letter A.

As promised: some help for the Barbie tune: What Was I Made For? (it really is pretty!)
First: Here’s a link to the YouTube recording made by composer, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell
Here’s my recording of the Violin 1 part. Each part has the other voices quietly in the background.
Drive the Cold Winter Away - sheet music
Cuckold Come Out the Amrey: another Northumbria tune in A Dorian with a jaunty polka beat although it is considered a march. According to my research, the title translates to “Betrayed man, come out of the closet”.
Carolan’s Welcome: a tune by blind Celtic Harp player, Turlough O’Carolan
What Was I Made For: Billie Eilish’s contribution to the Barbie soundtrack. This is going to be a challenge, but a fun one!
Morpeth Rant: a Northumbrian melody set to quartet by Georgia Nettleton.
December 5 - We’ve chosen The Crown of Roses and Sonata Prima for our contributions to the Holiday Party Music Celebration.
Hopefully we will also have time during this class to play through Drive the Cold Winter Away.
November 27 - If you have copies from previous years, PLEASE check them against the current postings.
Unless you have your heart set on playing Violin 2, I’ve practiced it now and can take it on (hardest one). We should have two people on Violin 1, one person on Violin 3 and Frank is playing Viola.
The Crown of Roses - (violin 1 and lyrics)

Sonata Prima Sheet Music (for our Party?)
November 13 -
Sonata No. 5, Hayden - We had this down pretty well when last we played it. I expect it will only get better.
Sonata Prima, Leonarda - great work on this in class! Hopefully we can bring up the tempo this week.
Musical Pastime, Rathgaber - it’s ALL about the dynamics! Plus a wee bit faster would spruce it up.
November 6 -
We chose these tunes to practice:
Sonata No. 5, Hayden
Sonata Prima, Leonarda
Musical Pastime, Rathgaber
Cradle Song, Schubert
October 31 -
We are getting somewhere with the 3 pieces from 10/24 so we’ll stick with them and add Trollens Brudmarsch
October 24 -
Madrigal
Suite No. 3 (Bach)
Gavotte
NEW Session: October 17 -
Gavotte by Muffat
Sonata No. 5 by Hayden
Orchestra Suite No. 3 by Bach
October 10 - Gavotte, by Muffat and Madrigal, Palestrina. We’ll also do the two Bach pieces if we have time.
October 3 - The new pieces of music are both from a book of Scottish fiddle tunes for 2 and 3 instruments. Planxty Fanny Power is usually played in G but this arrangement is in A (high strung Scots!). The Hen’s March is quirky and has some challenging rhythmic elements.
For both tunes I’ll play violin 3. Frank and Erna learn violin 1, Laura and Esther learn violin 2 (watch out for all those G#s in Fanny Power!). Maggie and Aita get to choose which parts to play from home.
Let’s plan on working on the new pieces and the 2 Bach pieces at the next class.
